We’re excited to once again host Champagne Philippe Gonet, this time with a special guest—Philomène Gonet Bregeon, the 8th generation of the family. Following in the footsteps of her mother, Chantal, and uncle, Pierre, Philomène is preparing to carry forward the family’s legacy in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger.
Currently working as a management consultant in financial services in Canada, Philomène is set to return to the family business in 2026. Over the years, she has joined her mother for harvests and business trips, earned her WSET Level 2 certification, and played an active role in the house’s communication campaigns.
Chantal Gonet visited us in 2023, offering a remarkable tasting of their exquisite champagnes. If you missed that event, here’s your chance to experience them firsthand. And if you joined us last time, this is a perfect opportunity to revisit these wines with a fresh perspective. Join us for a guided walkthrough tasting as we explore these champagnes, led by Philomène and her insights into this storied house.
BAKGROUND
Champagne Philippe Gonet is rooted in the rich heritage of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, a commune in the Champagne-Ardenne region of northeastern France. This area, noted for its exceptional terroir, has been pivotal in defining the quality and character of Gonet champagnes. Their 20 hectares of vines are spread over eight villages on the Côte des Blancs, Montgueux, the Côte de Sézanne, and the Marne Valley.
The Gonet family, now in their seventh generation, have long been dedicated vintners. Since the unexpected passing of their father in 1990, siblings Chantal and Pierre Gonet assumed leadership, diligently upholding the family's legacy. With his profound enology expertise, Pierre skillfully oversees the winemaking process. Concurrently, Chantal focuses on expanding the company's global presence, aiming to promote their wines internationally and connect with gastronomy enthusiasts worldwide.
Pierre and Chantal Gonet
Over a decade, Chantal and Pierre meticulously refined their approach, tailoring their techniques to each specific plot and implementing their own production and marketing structure. This transformational period marked a significant evolution in their winemaking. Initially, in 1990, only 10% of their production was exported; this figure has impressively grown to 60%. Today, they take pride in being recognized as one of the influential champagne producers in Mesnil-sur-Oger, a testament to their perseverance and innovative spirit.
The house, with its cellars dating back to 1783, is known for producing clean, pure, and delicate wines. These wines, a reflection of the rich terroirs, are a blend of pleasure and minerality, embodying the expertise honed over generations.
The family's passion for Chardonnay is evident in every bottle, highlighting their mastery over this varietal. At Champagne Philippe Gonet, they specialize in Blanc de Blancs, using only Chardonnay grapes. Their limited production, a contrast to larger houses, allows for meticulous attention to detail, ensuring the high quality that defines Philippe Gonet's champagnes.
