Raúl Pérez is joining us for a Walkthrough Tasting featuring his wines from Bodegas y Viñedos Raúl Pérez in Spain. Raúl is widely regarded as one of the most visionary winemakers. His accolades are many: “Winemaker of the Year” (Der Feinschmecker, 2014), “Best Winemaker in the World” (Bettane+Desseauve, 2015), and praise from Decanter calling him “the archetype of the intuitive winemaking genius.” Yet Raúl is known just as much for his humility as for his talent. As he often proves, these are not winemaker wines—they are pure expressions of place.

This tasting is an invitation to step into Raúl’s world—where each bottle reflects a specific place, season, and moment in time.

ABOUT

Universally regarded as one of the most influential winemakers of his generation, Raúl Pérez began crafting wine at just 22 and quickly became a defining voice of modern Spanish wine. After leaving his family estate in 2005, he founded Bodegas y Viñedos Raúl Pérez, helping propel Bierzo onto the global stage.

Though his projects now span multiple regions—including León, Rías Baixas, Ribeira Sacra, and Monterrei—Raúl’s heart remains in Valtuille de Abajo, the village where his family has tended vines for more than 300 years.

Raúl’s philosophy is simple and radical: intervene as little as possible. He studies each soil, microclimate, and ripening curve, allowing wines to express themselves naturally—without additives, without standardization, and with minimal oak influence. His goal is longevity with drinkability: wines that are compelling upon release and still vibrant after 15–20 years in bottle.

At the winery, Raúl works with both estate vineyards and carefully sourced grapes from trusted growers. He produces both white and red wines exclusively from native varieties, always in very limited quantities, dictated entirely by each year’s harvest, defining his unmistakable style.

In 2003, he launched Ultreia—named after the pilgrims’ greeting on the Camino de Santiago meaning “we go further”—a fitting symbol for a restless creator whose collaborations now extend to Portugal and South Africa.

One of Raúl’s most personal projects, La Vizcaína de Vinos, focuses on his home village of Valtuille de Abajo—bottling wines from individual vineyard sites to show how subtle differences in soil and exposure shape distinct expressions of Mencía, all with remarkable purity and sense of place.

Today, with over 200 wines recognized by The Wine Advocate, Raúl Pérez continues to redefine what Spanish wine can be: honest, alive, and deeply rooted in its origins.
