Let's welcome back Giovanni Rosso to Vinonueva for a Walthrough Tasting. This is not the first time winemaker Davide Rosso has visited us, and we are excited to once again share his wines with you.
Davide, now the fourth generation, has gained a reputation as one of the top Nebbiolo producers in Barolo, combining tradition with a contemporary vision.
Bernardo, Ana & Davide | 2022
This time around, we’ll also taste wines from his newer property on Mount Etna, adding a Sicilian dimension to the line-up.
We’ll explore six wines in total:
- 4 wines from Piedmont, highlighting the estate's roots.
- 2 wines from Etna, expressing the distinct personality of their Sicilian project.
BACKGROUND
Serralunga d'Alba – Barolo Heartland
Since 1906, Giovanni Rosso has been devoted to his family's vineyards that define the identity of their wines. Rooted in Serralunga d'Alba, one of the most iconic areas of Barolo, their bottles are recognized for strength, structure, and elegance. From celebrated MGAs (Menzione Geografica Aggiuntiva) such as Cerretta, La Serra, Broglio, Meriame, Sorano, and Lirano, the estate has produced wines that embody Nebbiolo's capacity to evolve into lasting, memorable expressions.
From then to today's fourth generation, Davide Rosso has brought a contemporary perspective. Under his leadership since 2001, the vineyards have been restructured with ultra-modern planting layouts. His vision comes to terms only with time and respect for the seasons, guided by the savoir faire passed down through generations: low yield means maximum yield. His training in Alba and France adds precision and finesse, while tradition ensures authenticity.
Etna – A New Chapter
In 2016, the Rosso family expanded south to the volcanic slopes of Etna, acquiring a 14-hectare estate in Solicchiata di Castiglione di Sicilia. At 750 meters, the mix of Nerello Mascalese, Carricante, and traditional varieties grows in lava sand soils under a unique microclimate. The vineyards are farmed honoring local methods while imprinting the elegance that defines Giovanni Rosso. These wines offer freshness, minerality, and vibrancy — a perfect complement to their Barolo roots.
